How to appear in Google AI Overviews

Google AI Overviews are the written summaries that sit above the classic results. The good news is that there is no separate system to game. Overviews draw from Google's normal Search index, so the work is familiar, with one common myth worth clearing up first.

Clear up the Google-Extended myth

Many people block a robots.txt token called Google-Extended and assume they have opted out of AI. That is not what it does. Google-Extended controls whether your content is used to ground and train Google's Gemini apps and Vertex AI. It does not control AI Overviews inside Search, and it has no effect on crawling, indexing or ranking.

In other words, AI Overviews are served from the same index as ordinary results, reached by the normal Googlebot. If Googlebot can crawl and index you, you are eligible for an Overview. Blocking Google-Extended is a separate choice about generative training, not a way in or out of Search AI.

What actually helps

Because Overviews reuse the Search index, the levers are the ones good Search already rewards, applied cleanly:

• Be crawlable and indexed. Confirm Googlebot is not blocked and your key pages are in the index.
• Add structured data. Valid schema.org markup helps Google understand entities, products and FAQs on the page.
• Answer the question plainly. A direct answer near the top of a section is easy to summarise.
• Show expertise and freshness. Clear authorship, real detail and visible update dates support trust.
• Match real questions. Headings that mirror how people ask are more likely to be pulled into an answer.
