How to appear in Google AI Overviews

Google AI Overviews are the written summaries that sit above the classic results. The good news is that there is no separate system to game. Overviews draw from Google's normal Search index, so the work is familiar, with one common myth worth clearing up first.

Clear up the Google-Extended myth

Many people block a robots.txt token called Google-Extended and assume they have opted out of AI. That is not what it does. Google-Extended controls whether your content is used to ground and train Google's Gemini apps and Vertex AI. It does not control AI Overviews inside Search, and it has no effect on crawling, indexing or ranking.

In other words, AI Overviews are served from the same index as ordinary results, reached by the normal Googlebot. If Googlebot can crawl and index you, you are eligible for an Overview. Blocking Google-Extended is a separate choice about generative training, not a way in or out of Search AI.

What actually helps

Because Overviews reuse the Search index, the levers are the ones good Search already rewards, applied cleanly:

Check the foundations first

Before chasing AI Overviews specifically, make sure the basics that feed them are solid. The free Avantas audit scores crawler access, structured data, answerability and the rest in about fifteen seconds. For the wider picture, start with how to get cited by AI.

Common questions

Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?

No. Google-Extended controls whether your content helps ground and train Google's Gemini apps and Vertex AI. AI Overviews inside Search are built from Google's normal Search index, so blocking Google-Extended does not remove you from them and does not change your ranking.

Is there special markup for AI Overviews?

There is no dedicated tag. AI Overviews use the same crawlable, well-structured, helpful pages that standard Search rewards. Valid schema.org structured data helps Google understand your content, which supports every surface including AI Overviews.

How do I know if my content is eligible?

If a page is indexed in normal Google Search and answers a clear question well, it is eligible to be drawn into an AI Overview. The free Avantas audit scores the underlying signals, from crawler access to structured data to answerability.
