Answer engine optimization, explained
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making your site easy for AI answer engines to find, understand and quote. The aim is simple: when a buyer asks a question, be the source the answer names.
Why a new term appeared
For twenty years, winning search meant ranking a page in a list of links. That list is now often topped by a written answer. In Google, it is called an AI Overview. In ChatGPT and Perplexity, the whole product is the answer. People read the reply, and many never scroll to the links below.
That shift changes the target. You are no longer only competing for a rank. You are competing to be one of the handful of sources an engine trusts enough to name inside its answer. The practice of earning that place is what people call answer engine optimization, or the near-identical term generative engine optimization (GEO).
How AEO differs from SEO
AEO does not replace SEO. It sits on top of it. An answer engine still has to reach your page, parse it and judge it trustworthy, which is exactly what good SEO already delivers. The emphasis shifts in three ways:
- From keywords to questions. Answer engines match real questions, so pages built around the way buyers actually ask tend to get quoted.
- From pages to passages. Engines lift a clean paragraph, not a whole page. A self-contained answer near the top of the section is easier to quote.
- From links to references. Being mentioned and cited across the wider web, in plain language, feeds the models that decide who is worth naming.
What actually moves the needle
The concrete signals are not exotic. They are the same ones a careful SEO would recognise, applied with machines in mind:
- Allow the AI crawlers in your
robots.txtso engines can read you at all. - Add schema.org structured data so a machine knows what your page is.
- Write direct answers under question-shaped headings.
- Publish honest comparison and pricing pages that give engines something to quote.
- State who you are clearly, so you are not confused with a namesake.
The free Avantas audit scores your site across all of these in about fifteen seconds. For the two engines people ask about most, see how to get cited by ChatGPT and how to appear in Google AI Overviews.
Common questions
What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the practice of making a website easy for AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews to find, understand and quote. The goal is to be the source named inside a written answer, not just a link in a list.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
Broadly yes. Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the term some use for the same idea: earning visibility inside AI-generated answers. AEO and GEO are used interchangeably in most conversations.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. AEO builds on SEO. Answer engines still rely on crawlable, well-structured, trustworthy pages, so good SEO is the foundation. AEO adds emphasis on direct answers, structured data and being referenced by others.
