How to get your site cited by AI

More buyers now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google a question and read the written answer instead of clicking through ten links. This guide covers the seven levers that decide whether those answer engines can find, understand and quote your site, in plain terms you can act on today.

There is no secret. Answer engines read the same public pages a person can, then decide which sources are clear enough to trust and quote. Your job is to remove every reason for a machine to skip you, and to give it clean, self-contained answers worth lifting. That splits into seven levers.

The seven levers

  1. Let the AI crawlers in. If GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Bingbot are blocked in robots.txt, no amount of good content will get you cited. Check what you allow before anything else.
  2. Add structured data. Schema.org markup (Organization, Product, FAQPage, Article) tells a machine what your page is, not just what it says. It is the single highest-leverage change on most sites.
  3. Answer questions directly. Answer engines lift clean, self-contained answers. Put the direct answer in the first two sentences under a question-shaped heading, then expand.
  4. Build an honest comparison surface. When a buyer asks how you compare, the AI needs something to quote. An honest 'you vs alternatives' page and clear pricing get referenced heavily.
  5. Make your entity unambiguous. One consistent name, a plain about page, and sameAs links to your profiles stop AI confusing you with a namesake and let it describe you correctly.
  6. Keep content fresh and dated. Visible published and updated dates signal that a page is current. Answer engines lean towards recent, maintained sources.
  7. Nail the technical basics. Fast, crawlable, valid HTML with proper titles, canonicals, a sitemap and HTTPS. Table stakes, but a broken basic quietly sinks everything above it.

Common questions

What does it mean to be cited by AI?

When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google a question, the answer engine writes a short reply and often names or links a few sources. Being cited means your site is one of those named sources for questions your buyers actually ask.

Is this different from SEO?

It overlaps but is not the same. Classic SEO aims to rank a page in a list of blue links. Answer engine optimization aims to be the source an AI quotes inside a single written answer. Clean structure, direct answers and machine-readable markup matter more than ever.

How long does it take to see a difference?

Technical fixes like unblocking crawlers and adding schema take effect as soon as engines recrawl, often within days to a few weeks. Being referenced more often is slower, because it depends on being genuinely useful and cited elsewhere.
